We only have a few days before one of the most important and beautiful times in the year: Holy Week, when traditions are all over the town and in the air we breath a smell of incense.
In preparation of the events and activities organised during Holy Week 2022 in Torremolinos, we have Lent events such as the Vía Crucis departing from Cristo Resucitado parish church, with the image of the Lord Santísimo Cristo de la Sentencia marching in procession through the streets of El Calvario area, on April 2nd after Mass at 7:30 pm.
A Lent concert will be held on April 4th at 7:30 pm at Cristo Resucitado parish church, by the students and teachers of the Local Music School in Torremolinos.
On April 7th at 7:30 pm, the local cultural centre Centro Cultural Pablo Ruiz Picasso will hold a live music event to honour the traditional shawl worn by Spanish women in Holy Week, an event called Acto de Exaltación de la mantilla, performing BCT Antiguos Caballeros Legionarios de Torremolinos, Bonela (Junior) on the guitar, saeta singers Macarena Soto and Francis Bonela (Son), and Diego Estrada Fernández reciting.
Finally on April 9th at 8:00 pm, there will be a Concert of Sacred Music at La Carihuela parish church, performing the Torremolinos Choir, El Castillo Choir from Rincón de la Victoria and the Choir of the College of Physicians of Málaga (COM).
Four different Holy Week processions have traditionally existed in Torremolinos on Palm Sunday, Holy Tuesday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, with Madre del Buen Consejo and Cristo Resucitado parish churches playing a big role. There is a change this year, but the religious images in Nuestra Señora Madre del Buen Consejo parish church in the heart of town, as well as those in Nuestro Señor Cristo Resucitado parish church in El Calvario area, will be available to visit during the Holy Week.
The different Brotherhoods in town take their thrones with religious images out by the streets of Torremolinos, usually carried by male carriers called hombres de trono (although there are also female carriers) accompanied in the procession by nazarenes, women wearing the traditional Holy Week shawl, and penitents. Different sacred music bands also accompany the thrones.
Our Holy Week religious images and events impress our visitors, specially foreigners, surprised by the mixture of joy, celebration and solemnity. The processions follow routes carefully studied and organised by the Brotherhoods, so take our advice: keep quiet and be respectful when a procession passes by your side, because it is a manifestation of culture and religion.
The first Holy Week procession in Torremolinos is on Palm Sunday, 10th of April this year, departing from Madre del Buen Consejo parish church. Holy Mass and the traditional blessing of palms and olive tree branches are celebrated at 10:00 am.
According to the Christian religion, Palm Sunday celebrates Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem, and the procession known as La Pollinica shows that moment, with the penitents carrying palm fronds while accompanying the images of Jesus entering Jerusalem and the Virgin Santa María Reina de la Paz. Some balconies in houses all over the route are decorated with these images.
The procession starts at 11:00 am in Madre del Buen Consejo parish church, addressed at Calle Madre del Buen Consejo 5 in the town center, next to the square Plaza Pablo Ruiz Picasso. La Pollinica passes by Plaza Costa del Sol, Calle San Miguel, Plaza de la Nogalera, Avenida Joan Miró, Calle Fernando de Prado, Calle Santa Rosa, Calle Europa, Avenida Isabel Manoja and Calle Río Arba, before returning to the church.
The procession with the image of Jesus entering Jerusalem will be accompanied by the music band Agrupación Musical Virgen del Carmen de Torrenueva (Granada), and the image of the Virgin Santa María Reina de la Paz will be accompanied by the Benalmádena Municipal Music Band. This will be the route followed by the procession of the images Jesús a su entrada en Jerusalén y María Santísima Reina de la Paz:
On Holy Monday at 6:30 pm, the San Miguel Arcángel parish church, addressed at Plaza San Miguel, will be the site of the Holy Week Concert “Concierto de Semana Santa Por la Paz”, with the performances of the choirs Coral de Torremolinos, Coral El Castillo de Rincón de la Victoria, and the Choir of the College of Physicians of Málaga.
On Holy Wednesday at 7:15 pm, Santa María del Mar parish church located in Playamar will be the site of the “Cembalo Concert Microcosmos” by musician Bastian Uhlig.
Visit Cristo Resucitado parish church for the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm. There you can also see the religious images of the Lord Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Sentencia and the Virgin Nuestra Señora del Calvario.
Early in the morning on Good Friday, at 9:00 am, a Via Crucis will take place along La Carihuela’s streets. The religious image of the Lord Santísimo Cristo de Los Milagros will march in procession through the streets of this former fisherman’s area.
The members of the Brotherhood taking the image of the Lord to the shore while reciting as penitents is one of the most moving moments. All the members of the Brotherhood, men and women, wish to participate and will take turns carrying the image of the Lord.
At noon, another Via Crucis will take place along the town centre, departing from Madre del Buen Consejo parish church, with the image of the Lord Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno marching in procession, and the traditional Good Friday religious ceremony called los Santos Oficios de la Pasión del Señor will take place at 5:00 pm also in this church.
On the evening of Good Friday, there will be new processions departing from Madre del Buen Consejo parish church after 7:00 pm. Men and women of the Brotherhood, called hombres de trono and mujeres de trono, will carry the religious images of the Lord Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno and the Virgin María Santísima de los Dolores through the streets of Torremolinos. It is one of the most solemn days for Christians, a day to remember the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ.
The image of the Lord Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno will be accompanied by the music band Agrupación Musical Vera Cruz de Palma del Río (Córdoba), and the image of the Virgin María Santísima de los Dolores will be accompanied by the music band Banda Musical de Las Flores de Málaga. This will be the route followed by this procession:
Easter Vigil will take place on Holy Saturday at 8:00 pm at Cristo Resucitado parish church, and will also be celebrated at midnight at Madre del Buen Consejo parish church.
On Easter Sunday, the last day of the Holy Week, Holy Mass will be conducted at noon and also at 7:00 pm at Madre del Buen Consejo and Cristo Resucitado parish churches, as well as at 10:00 am at Cristo Resucitado parish church.
The religious images of the Lord Cristo Resucitado and the Virgin Virgen de la Estrella Reina de los Cielos can be visited these days in the Cristo Resucitado parish church.
