The night of the Three Wise Men is closer, and in Torremolinos, we want all the wishes to be fulfilled at home. Children are real protagonists of this wonderful moment. In our town, the dream starts on December 22nd, with the presentation -at the Casa de los Navajas- of the Three Wise Men wearing their bright new clothes and, continues January 2nd with the Wise Men arrival at the Rincón de Sol Beach in La Carihuela.
Imagination and creativity are at their best, with children’s letters send to the Wise Men, with their wishes for gifts. Their friends, cousins and brothers are often entrusted with these secrets and conversations go wild on who behaved best during the year. On January 4th, the Wise Men Postman is due to visit Montemar Alto to collect all letters and wishes to then hand them over to Melchor, Gaspar and Balthasar.
Torremolinos endeavors to make that night a special one. This is when the city is illuminated by hundreds of light and colorful decorations to receive the Three Wise Men in an incredible parade on January 5th in the afternoon. Smiles, music, confetti, and plenty of sweets also attend to enlighten the youngest faces.
After the parade, one of the most specific traditions is on its way: the preparation of the house for the arrival of the Wise Men during the night. Shoes are placed under the tree; three glasses of milk and three cookies are left prepared for the Wise Men and camels to dispose of when visiting the home. This is to reward their hard work and busy day. The night before wishes are accomplished; nerves are sky high. Children go to bed early, close their eyes and fall asleep as soon as possible to let the Wise Men start the distribution.
In the morning, the beautiful sounds of little footsteps towards the tree awakes the adults. This is the moment for gifts and unforgettable expressions of joy when children unpack and discover wonders. Happiness is felt everywhere in the house. Those not behaving during the year may even have to face some surprise: a piece of sweet dark coal …
This day also tastes like no other since families enjoy the delicious Roscón de Reyes. With ingredients like cream, candied fruits, the surprise hidden inside the cake and the King of the Day tradition. The moment is so sweet and special, with relatives and friends around: children playing in the street and eating a slice of Roscón de reyes. Families also feel enthusiastic during these days; adults feel emotional about their past childhoods and innocence. Years go by and the illusion is still vivid when preparing -with love and affection- the future gifts. The joy of the youngest ones unpacking is the best reward for adults. Carrying on the tradition and illusion is our duty, as parents, grandparents, or relatives. Maintaining alive the magic of this day and, transmitting it from generation to generation is a must.
