Every year, Torremolinos experiences the Carnival with intensity, thanks to the already traditional COAC (Official Contest of the Carnival Group of Cadiz) that during a week organicez the «Murgas» (singing groups) and «Comparsas» (costumed dance and singing groups) at the Municipal «Auditorio Principe de Asturias «(Prince of Asturias Auditorium). The grand finale, with the best groups, assures us the laughter and a good atmosphere.
The Carnival in Torremolinos kicks off with the Drag Gala and the CarniBall, two events organized by «Acogat»,the Gay Traders Association of Torremolinos, which are the starting gun for the good atmosphere that invades our city every year at Carnival. CarniBall is a dance and parade show based on the «ball culture» movement that emerged in the United States in the 1920s and became popular in the 1960s as a form of free expression. It is part of the Gay Carnival that has its main party in the Drag Queen Gala that takes place in the Plaza de La Nogalera and that each year chooses the Drag Queen Torremolinos. The first three winners will participate in the Torremolinos Pride parade in May. The Gala Drag is a great show where fantasy and brilliance take over the stage in the Plaza de La Nogalera, filled with performances and dancing.
The Torremolinos Groups Competition, is one of the protagonists, of the COAC Torremolinos, which in several days is filled with the funny and sincere lyrics of the main «murgas» and «groups» of Malaga and Cádiz. In 2019, 18 groups participated, ten murgas and eight groups that showed their rhymes in the Prince of Asturias Municipal Auditorium for three days. The final takes place in the evening and is always the same, four murgas and four comparsas. Every year in the evening a comparsa or chirigota from Cádiz is invited to vibrate the audience. The finalist groups will give us a fantastic evening.
After the COAC competition, the carnival moves to the streets of Torremolinos and colors the city with colors and costumes. Saturday, early in the morning, on the Plaza de La Nogalera the big carnival party will be organized and starts with the children’s competition from 12 noon to 2 pm. Following this, the traditional parade from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM invades Torremolinos city center, Calle San Miguel and Boulevar Costa del Sol. Every year, the finalists of the COAC Torremolinos shine in this parade, taking to the streets the most acclaimed lyrics during the competition, so that people can make them their own. The party ends again in the Plaza de La Nogalera, with the performance of a chirigota from the Competition of Cádiz. And for adults, there is also a costume contest, so if you plan on coming to Torremolinos for Carnival, put your costume in your suitcase.
As a final highlight, the carnival moves to La Carihuela, to the Plaza del Remo, where it is tradition that the party ends with the traditional «Burning of the sardine» and the parade of nymphs and momo gods who dazzle us with their costumes every year.
